It's time for Vancouver's close-up

This year for the first time, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival will be on the big screen - its own 320-square-foot (30-square-metre) display, set up to magnify the talent onstage for those sitting far off on the grass. The new screen seems a good symbol of recent efforts to make the festival more visible to its community, which not so long ago wondered whether this annual jamboree might join the list of cultural projects that have failed to make themselves indispensable to Vancouver.

A visitor to DOTE always gets an introduction to the newest generation of local choreographers. The current up-and-comers seem to prefer a high-energy, hybrid style, judging from the work of Amber Funk Barton and Shay Kuebler.

Medical opinion is divided over whether twin girls born joined at the head in Vancouver last year can be separated.The eight-month-old girls, Krista and Tatiana Hogan, live with their parents in Vernon, B.C., but returned to Vancouver on Tuesday for a CT scan at Children's Hospital.

The RCMP are looking for a man who attacked a nurse in the parkade of Surrey Memorial Hospital.The assault happened on June 20, but police are just releasing information now on the crime, including a composite sketch of the suspect.
