Plants uprooted for the Winter Games

In the muck of a wetland atop a mountain at West Vancouver's Cypress Provincial Park, volunteer gardeners gently tug at the butterwort plants. The plants have to move out, so to speak, to make way for a water reservoir needed for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Soaring mercury levels broke at least six records across the Lower Mainland this week, but the heat should ease off a bit this weekend for sweltering Vancouverites, according to Environment Canada.

This year for the first time, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival will be on the big screen - its own 320-square-foot (30-square-metre) display, set up to magnify the talent onstage for those sitting far off on the grass. The new screen seems a good symbol of recent efforts to make the festival more visible to its community, which not so long ago wondered whether this annual jamboree might join the list of cultural projects that have failed to make themselves indispensable to Vancouver.

Medical opinion is divided over whether twin girls born joined at the head in Vancouver last year can be separated.The eight-month-old girls, Krista and Tatiana Hogan, live with their parents in Vernon, B.C., but returned to Vancouver on Tuesday for a CT scan at Children's Hospital.
