Union awaits ruling on essential services

The city of Vancouver sent a formal letter yesterday urging the union that represents the city's outside workers to come back to the bargaining table instead of striking.''We've only been bargaining with them since the start of the year and we've indicated there's still flexibility and room for movement,'' city spokesman Jerry Dobrovolny said.

A mechanical problem on the Queen of Oak Bay ferry yesterday morning will cause serious travel delays between the mainland and Vancouver Island for at least a week.''The vessel had sailed from Departure Bay on its scheduled 8:30 sailing and en route over to Horseshoe Bay one of the bearings in a gearbox overheated,'' said B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.
