Crash kills pilot, injures passengers

A hockey player who played for the San Jose Sharks' farm team last season was injured in a plane crash on Vancouver Island that killed the pilot.Glenn Olson, a 23-year-old left winger, who is currently a free agent after playing for the Worchester Sharks, was rescued from the crash site, media reports said. He was listed in stable condition yesterday, said a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit of St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox. A second passenger, a 22-year-old man, also survived and was in critical condition.

Police target prostitutes near Pickton trial

The New Westminster Police Service has conducted a sting operation to arrest prostitutes and their customers a few blocks from the courthouse holding the trial of Robert Pickton.A three-day undercover operation on 12th Street in New Westminster led to arrests that were announced on the same day a police officer at Mr. Pickton's trial testified about an incident on the so-called stroll on 12th Street eight years ago.

Slain principal's husband reported detained in B.C.

The husband of slain elementary school principal Shemina Hirji was held in custody over the weekend but released without any charges being laid, CTV reported yesterday.However RCMP Corporal Dale Carr, of the Lower Mainland integrated homicide investigation unit, refused in an interview to confirm media reports that the prime and only suspect was Ms. Hirji's husband of about a week, Paul Cheema. He would only confirm that police arrested ''the prime suspect'' in the case at a residence in Surrey, B.C., on Saturday.
