It's clear to me, after hearing the ''leaders'' and ''elders'' from the Huu-ay-aht and Tsawwassen first nations comment on the ratification votes in their communities (Vancouver Island Treaty Passes With Large Majority - July 30; B.C. Native Band Accepts First Urban Treaty - July 26), that this issue of treaty-making is far beyond politics or even rationality. These agreements make no political or financial sense from a first nations perspective, yet they are being ratified nonetheless. (Globe Insider subscribers only)

With the plethora of new restaurants opening this summer, Vancouver's culinary scene offers something for everyone. Funny, though. A special prosecutor appointed to look into allegations of sexual abuse in the polygamous colony of Bountiful in southeast B.C. has completed his report.Vancouver lawyer Richard Peck has given his findings to the Criminal Justice Branch, and branch spokesman Neil MacKenzie said justice officials are studying it.

Street racer who killed pedestrian in custody again

The driver of the speeding Porsche Boxster that struck and killed pedestrian Jerry Kithithee during a street race in 2000 is in custody once more for alleged driving violations. Kwok Kei Victor Tang, who was sentenced to four years in jail and banned from driving for 10 years over the high-profile Vancouver incident, was stopped by Richmond RCMP this week while driving a vehicle that did not display a front licence plate. According to police, he then provided them with a false name and address.

A 17-year-old male was shot at least twice yesterday during an early-morning fight in Vancouver's downtown core, police say.Police are still searching for two men, one of whom shot the youth with a handgun, they say.
