Mill contract no 'road map'for industry: spokesman

Saturday 4 August 2007
A two-year contract ratified by employees of a Surrey sawmill provides no incentive for heading back to the bargaining table, Forest Industrial Relations spokesman Ron Shewchuk said yesterday. About 100 employees at Surrey's Mackenzie Sawmill Ltd. voted earlier this week to accept a two-year contract that United Steelworkers said could serve as a ''road map'' for other negotiations. Mr. Shewchuk, however, said the contract fails to meet FIR concerns over the issues of contracting out, severance pay and work schedules. About 7,000 logging and sawmilling workers in B.C.'s $2-billion-a-year coastal forest sector, including about 3,500 employed by FIR's 31 member companies, have been on strike since July 21. No talks are scheduled.
