Surrey union ratifies five-year agreement

The vast majority of civic workers in Surrey have voted to ratify a five-year agreement, making it the sixth municipality surrounding Vancouver to officially achieve labour peace.CUPE 402 president Laurie Larsen said she would have preferred a shorter term, but was glad the matter had been settled, citing an extra week of vacation for long-time employees as a key part of the new contract. The 17.5-per-cent wage increase over five years is similar to recent deals made in Burnaby, Richmond, Delta and North Vancouver District.

RCMP investigate deaths of two men in custody

RCMP are investigating two custody deaths: one in the Vancouver Island town of Tofino and the other at Penticton in the B.C. Interior.Tofino RCMP say a 38-year-old man was arrested Saturday for public drunkenness and taken to the local jail. The man was checked by a guard early Sunday and found to have stopped breathing, then was pronounced dead at Tofino General Hospital.

Campers being treated for Norwalk-like symptoms

Nineteen people attending a family reunion have received medical attention in hospital after they began showing symptoms of a virus similar to the Norwalk strain.Gerry Graxton of the B.C. Ambulance Service said about 100 people were attending the event at the New Westminster Royal Canadian Legion Memorial Camp on the long weekend. He said two children showing symptoms similar to the Norwalk virus arrived on Friday and, as of noon yesterday, 28 people were complaining of illness.

Vancouver-Nanaimo ferry suddenly out of service

A B.C. ferry on the Duke Point-Tsawwassen run has been removed from service for a week for unscheduled work on one of its clutches.The Queen of Alberni was pulled out of service on one of the busiest travel days of the year. The ship will be replaced by the Queen of New Westminster today and the Queen of Esquimalt after that.
