Vancouver police, in the early stages of trying to solve one of the worst shootings in the city's history, yesterday said they are struggling to deal with a tide of guns in the streets of a community that will welcome the world for the Winter Olympics in less than three years.

Vancouver police launched a massive hunt yesterday for two masked gunmen who strolled into a Chinese restaurant at about 4:30 a.m. and opened fire, killing two of eight people at one table and wounding six others in what police described as possibly the worst shooting in city history.

Vancouver man gets 10 years for child porn

Vladamir Regalado, 44, of Vancouver was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court to 10 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release for Possession of Child Pornography. He was arrested at the Canada-U.S. border on April 25, 2006, after a customs search of his luggage uncovered a note expressing his sexual interest in children.

Housing starts on Island increase 63 per cent

Canada Mortgage and Housing reports construction began on more than 400 new homes on Vancouver Island in July, a 63-per-cent increase over the same period last year.Housing starts in other Island cities were slightly lower, but CMHC says multi-family starts are expected to pick up in the second half of the year.

Surrey union ratifies five-year agreement

The vast majority of civic workers in Surrey have voted to ratify a five-year agreement, making it the sixth municipality surrounding Vancouver to officially achieve labour peace.CUPE 402 president Laurie Larsen said she would have preferred a shorter term, but was glad the matter had been settled, citing an extra week of vacation for long-time employees as a key part of the new contract. The 17.5-per-cent wage increase over five years is similar to recent deals made in Burnaby, Richmond, Delta and North Vancouver District.
