Canada Mortgage and Housing reports construction began on more than 400 new homes on Vancouver Island in July, a 63-per-cent increase over the same period last year.Housing starts in other Island cities were slightly lower, but CMHC says multi-family starts are expected to pick up in the second half of the year.

Vladamir Regalado, 44, of Vancouver was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court to 10 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release for Possession of Child Pornography. He was arrested at the Canada-U.S. border on April 25, 2006, after a customs search of his luggage uncovered a note expressing his sexual interest in children.
