Firefighter honoured as one 'to face danger with'

More than 1,000 firefighters from across the continent came to Vancouver yesterday to pay tribute to their colleague Robert Hall, even though many had never met him.Dressed in prim dark-blue uniforms, they marched through the downtown streets, then filed into St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church to say goodbye to the veteran firefighter, whom they knew by the legacy he left behind.

Vancouver, union meet but bargaining still stalled

Officials from the city of Vancouver and its striking inside workers union met face-to-face Monday for the first time since Aug. 9.CUPE Local 15 chief negotiator Keith Graham called the meeting a positive step toward getting back to the bargaining table. However, city spokesman Jerry Dobrovolny said there will not be a return to the table until the union indicates a willingness to move on the six issues the city considers essential and will not compromise on. Those issues are listed on the city's website.

After 10 weeks riding a tandem bike from Penticton to St. John's for charity, Dave Cleveland and Stacey Butterfield flew back to Vancouver last weekend to complete the final leg of their journey. When they arrived at the airport, however, they found their bike's frame had been crushed during the flight - along with their dream of crossing Canada on a bicycle built for two.
