Two people were wounded after a pair of masked gunmen opened fire through the window of a Vancouver restaurant on the weekend at a birthday party of about 25 people.

A special prosecutor has been appointed to look into a possibly illegal land deal in Abbotsford involving Harry Oppal, the brother of B.C. Attorney-General Wally Oppal.Vancouver lawyer George Macintosh will review an investigation conducted by the Financial Institutions Commission of B.C. into allegations that several people were involved in a potentially illegal land deal in Abbotsford.

Building to be named after first Chinese MP

A federal government building in downtown Vancouver will be named after the first Chinese Canadian Member of Parliament, Douglas Jung, government officials announced yesterday.Mr. Jung served in Parliament from 1957 to 1962, and was a distinguished war veteran and human-rights activist. Born in Victoria, he was also the first Chinese Canadian lawyer to appear before the British Columbia Court of Appeal, and received the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia.

NDP MLA suspended for opposition to treaty

The New Democrat MLA who says he'll vote against the Tsawwassen treaty has been suspended from caucus. Michael Sather, the MLA for Maple-Ridge Pitt Meadows, will be suspended until the end of the fall sitting of the legislature.

Striking unions ask for a return to formal talks

Long-awaited labour peace in Vancouver may be on the horizon as the city and the three unions representing its striking workers are returning to the bargaining table.The move comes after the unions - CUPE locals 15, 1004 and 391 - sent a letter to the city yesterday, asking its bargaining team to return to formal negotiations.
